In 2015 Phil, was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer, followed almost 2 years later with a metastatic diagnosis. After a lobectomy to remove half of his left lung, he refused treatment. He changed his diet and started training as an endurance athlete. For the last 7 years Phil has competed in two 50-mile ultramarathons, one 50-K ultramarathon, 1 marathon, 4 half marathons, and 4 sprint triathlons. After becoming a 2x cancer survivor turned endurance athlete, Phil turned his running into purpose by starting a foundation to raise money for kids who have lost a parent to cancer
